DIY RIBBON CHRISTMAS TREE CENTREPIECE

Usually at this time of year I am grumpy.

I’m overwhelmed with Christmas and shopping, the decorating, the planning, all the money being spent.

This year however I feel different. I feel relaxed and excited.  We are almost done all our Christmas shopping, we purchased a new pre-lit tree this year that makes my heart happy and purchased a new star, ornaments and tree skirt.

The theme going forward is more sophisticated and natural. Neutral colours, wood elements, and just simple design.

I love all the amazing centerpiece’s on the market, but we already spent enough money on new decor so I decided to make a DIY RIBBON CHRISTMAS TREE

When I start crafting I immediately go to the dollarstore and look for coupons and sales and this time was no different.

THINGS YOU WILL NEED:

  • tree base (dollarama)
  • 2 styles of ribbon (micheals on sale and used a coupon)
  • glue gun
  • lots of glue sticks (dollarama)
  • scissors
  • ruler
  • tape
  • brown craft paper

$4.25 (trees) + $25 (ribbon) + $1 (glue sticks)

TOTAL COST: $30.25

For me that’s a steal since I ended up having enough of everything to complete both a large and small tree. It will cost you more if you have to get more of the supplies listed but I already had some stuff on hand.

Now I have a beautiful DIY ribbon christmas tree centrepiece that I can use every year and feel proud that I made it!

STEP ONE: Dismantle the ugly dollerama tinsel tree

I got 2 trees for my DIY ribbon christmas tree project. A larger one that cost me $3 and a smaller one that was $1.25.

All you do is remove the tinsel and you are left with a base shape.  I got these bases because the foam ones at Micheal’s are over $10 for a medium sized one and I wanted a big tree for cheap! Also I wanted to do more than one and not break the bank. Did I mention I was cheap?

STEP TWO: Cover your base with craft paper.

Sounds easy enough right?

My paper was too small so I had to do it in 2 parts.  I just used tape to secure the edges.DIY RIBBON CHRISTMAS TREE | lifebymom.com

One thing to remember is to make sure there is a longer edge on the bottom of the tree frame.

When you are done securing go back along the edge and cut slits into the edge.

This will allow you to fold up each section and secure with hot glue.  Giving it a more refined bottom edge.DIY RIBBON CHRISTMAS TREE | lifebymom.com

Here is the completed bottom edge of the DIY ribbon christmas tree.

Now you are left with a paper covered tree shaped cone.

STEP THREE: cut your ribbon.

I don’t have any pictures of this but what I did was use my rotary knife and cut the ribbon into 3 inch lengths.  This gives the perfect amount to loop and layer on the tree.

I was also cheap and bought thick ribbon because it was on sale and I went ahead and just cut it down the middle to make a custom size.  The green ribbon I used was left the size it came but the burlap looking ribbon was cut down the centre and then cut into 3 inch lengths.

STEP FOUR: secure your ribbon lengths.

This is the most time consuming step.

Take one 3 inch piece and place a strip of hot glue along the back.  Attach it to the DIY ribbon christmas tree base. Let the glue set.

Add another strip of hot glue to the inner edge

and secure the other half of the ribbon creating a loop

Its that easy!

Now all you have to do is continue this all the way up the tree.  I used two types of ribbon alternating rows.  I also started each row off centre from the row beneath it so it wasn’t totally in line.  I think it adds dimension to the tree.  It took me a total of about 2 hours to complete this tree.  Once you get into a grove though its very easy to do and if you have all your ribbon pre-cut it goes even faster.

At this point I sent a picture to my father showing him what I was making then he proceeded to tell me it looks like a gnome.

UGH it did not! lol

STEP FIVE: Create a topper.

This part I had no idea what to do and to be honest I’m still not 100% I’m in love with how I finished it off but this is what I did.

I took a 6 inch piece of ribbon and glued the two edges in the centre. I made 2 pieces like this.

Then I hot glued them onto the folded tip of theDIY ribbon christmas tree.

I layered them opposite ways and then glued the edges down so they were flatter.

Then held it all down until it was secure.

Here is the final top loops.

Like I said not perfect but it will do until I figure something else out.

Maybe I need a star on top of myDIY ribbon christmas tree?

If you have a suggestion or an idea about how to finish off the top of this tree PLEASE comment and let me know!
